guys, pls answer this. The speed of light is 3x10^5(150 000 000 km/s). The distance from earth to sun is 1.5x10^8(300 000 km). How long time does it take the light from sun to reach earth, answer in minutes and seconds. So what i did was 150 000 000/300 000 wich is 500 But 500 what? km, minutes, seconds? anyway i continued with: 500/60 because they want in minutes and seconds and i get it to 8.33 wich i translated to 8 minutes and 33 seconds, but its wrong because somehow its supoosed to be 8 minutes and 20 seconds so pls help me
You divide the distance in Km by the speed of light in Km/second!!.
1.5 X 10^8/3 X 10^5=500 seconds, the time it takes light to reach Earth. Km units cancel out when you divide Km/Km/second. So you are left with seconds.
The units you use aren't exact, but approximations!. The speed of light is:299,792.458Km/second.
And the mean distance between Earth and Sun is:149,597,870.700Km. If you divide one by the other, you get:149,597,870.7/299,792.458=499.004783=8 minutes and 19 seconds.
how is aprox. 500 or 499.004783=8 minutes and 19 seconds? explain please, im very bad at math
NO!. I meant the units you used for distance and the speed of light were approximations, even though it will make no practical difference. The answer you got WAS right because: 500/60=8.3333333333333.....etc. Subtract 8 and you are left with .3333333333333 seconds. Then you multiply .33333333333 X 60=20 seconds. So, you were right anyway. I don't know why you said you got wrong answer. Probably, because you made a mistake by taking .333333333333333 as 33 seconds!. Rememeber .3333333333=1/3 of minute or of 60 seconds. So, 1/3 of 60=20 seconds.
