Each solution to x^2 + 5x + 8 = 0 can be written in the form x = a+bi, where a and b are real numbers. What is a + b^2?

The quadratic x^2-3x+1 can be written in the form ,(x+b)^2+c where b and c are constants. What is b+c?

x^2 + 5 x + 8 = 0         has roots (solutions)     - 5/2   +- sqrt (7)/2  i         (obtained by Quadratic Formula)

                                                            so     a   + b^2    =   -5/2 + (7/4)  =  - 10/4  + 7/4  = - 3/4
