if -40 = 50t + 4.9t^2 what is t?

First re-arrange your equation that it looks familiar, like this:

4.9t^2 + 50t=-40, one further step. Move the -40 from right to left and change the sign from - to +,

4.9t^2 + 50t +40=0. This is called a "quadratic equation". You should have been taught by now how to solve these equations. It's in your textbook. Check you textbook and you will see many examples of quadratic equation and how to solve them, step by step. Remember, if you get the right answer for t, and substitute it the in left hand side, then you should get zero. Good luck.
