I like to put these into a box - it avoids the algebra, I'll try and show you.

| 3 *2 | 4 *2 | 3+4=7 7*2=14 |
| 6 | 8 | 14 |
It is easy to see tht 7*2=14 so you hav to multiple each of the others by 7 too.
If *2 was not so obvious you could say 14 divided by 7=2
So the brothers get $6 and $8 respecively.
