Two trains travel in opposite directions, starting from the same location. One leaves at noon, while the other leaves an hour later, traveling 20 mph faster. If they both travelled the same distance by 1:15 pm, what was the speed of the slower train?

x = slow train speed (mph)

x+20 = faster train

Slow train travels  1.25 hours for a distance of   1.25 x

Faster train leaves an hour later and travels only .25 hour so distance is  .25(x+20)

The tow distances ae equal, we are told

.25(x+20) = 1.25x

.25x + 5 = 1.25x

5 mph = x = slower train        FYI: Faster train is 20 + x =  20 + 5 = 25  mph
