3x - 54 = x + 2       subtract x from both sides......add 54 to both sides

2x = 56     divide both sides by 2

x= 28

cool cool cool

3x - 54 = x + 2

I assume you are solving for "x", so:

1. Isolate x on one side of the equation.

3x - 54 = x + 2

-x           -x

I took x from both sides in order to isolate it.

Now, the equation looks like this:

2x - 54 = 2

2. Make sure the number is on the opposite side of x.

2x - 54 = 2

    + 54  +54

I added 54 to both sides to put the number on the opposite side of x.

After doing that, the equaion now looks like this:

2x = 56

3. Find the answer to a single x.

2x = 56

‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾

    2

I divided the whole equation by 2 to make x "1".

Now you have your answer!

x = 28
