If you have adivision expression that has the same base in both the numerator and the denominator, subtract the exponents.

Examples:

1)     x¹³ / x⁵  =  x^{13 - 5} =  x⁸

 

2)     x⁷ / x⁷  =  x^{7 - 7}  =  x⁰  =  1

 

3)     x³ / x⁷  =  x^{3 - 7}  =  x^-4  =  1 / x⁴ 

 

4)     ( 4x³y⁵z ) / ( 8x⁴y³z⁷ )  =  (  4/8 )( x³ / x⁴ )( y⁵ / y³ )( z / z⁷ )  =  ( 1/2 )( x^{3 - 4} )( y^{5 - 3} )( z^{1 - 7} )  =  (1/2)( x^-1 y² z^-6 )

                                            =  (1/2)·y² / ( xz⁶ )  =  y² / ( 2xz⁶ )

 

5)     (12x²yz⁵ ) / ( 51x³ab )  =   ( 12/51 )( x² / x³ )( yz⁵ ) / ( ab )  =  ( 4yz⁵ ) / ( 17xab )
