There are some apples and oranges in a kitchen. If 3 apples are removed, there will be 1/4 as many apples as oranges. If 3 oranges are removed, there will be equal number of apples and oranges. How many fruits are there altogether?

A==Apples,    G==Oranges

A  -  3 == 1 / 4 G,

G  -  3 ==A, solve for A, G

A ==5 apples

G ==8 oranges

5  +  8 ==13 - total fruits altogether.
