Dexter was asked to mix the punch for his sister’s birthday party. He has to figure out how much water and pure concentrate to add. How many liters of pure concentrate should be added to 10 liters of 20% concentrate to make a 50% concentrate punch?

(0.2*10+x)/(10+x) = 0.5; Subsituting x=6 would make (0.2*10+6)/10+6) = 8/16 = 0.5

You have to add 6 liters of pure concentrate

Pure  concentrate =  100%  = 1

20% concentrate  =.20

Let x  be the amount of pure concentrate

So

1x  + .20 (10) =  .50 (10 + x)    simplify

x  + 2  =  5  + .5x      rearrange as

x - .5x  =  5 -2

.5x = 3    divide both sides by .5

x =  6 L  of pure concentrate
