f(x)  =  3x - 8

 

Let's find what value of  x  makes  f(x)  be  -5 .

 

3x - 8   =   -5

3x   =   -5 + 8

3x   =   3

  x   =   1

 

When   x  =  1   ,  f(x)  is  -5 . That is,  f(1)  =  -5 .

 

g( f(x) )  =  2x² + 5x - 3

g( f(1) )  =  2(1)² + 5(1) - 3

g(  -5  )  =  2(1)² + 5(1) - 3

g(  -5  )  =  2(1) + 5(1) - 3

g(  -5  )  =  2 + 5 - 3

g(  -5  )  =  4
