Find $t$ such that $(t,5)$ lies on the line through $(0,3)$ and $(-8,0)$.

The slope of this line is    [ 3 - 0 ] / [ 0  -  -8 ]  =  3 / 8

 

So....using  (0,3,), the equation of the line is

 

y  = (3/8) x  + 3

 

And using (t, 5),  t  can be found thusly :

 

5 =(3/8) t  + 3     subtract 3 form both sides

 

2  = (3/8)t      multiply both sides by 8/3

 

16/3  =  t
