Let's start with the SECOND equation and solve for 'y'

x + 2y = -6       Divide both sides by 2 to get:

1/2x + y = -3    SUbtract 1/2x from both sides to get

y = -3 - 1/2x     Use this value for 'y' and substitute it into the FIRST equation:

-2x + (-3 - 1/2x) = -13   Now solve for 'x'

-2 1/2 x -3 = -13            Add 3 to both sides

-2 1/2 x = - 10                Divide both sides by -2 1/2 to find 'x'

x = 4

NOW, sustitute this value of 'x' into one of the equations to find 'y'

x + 2y = -6

4 + 2y = -6

2y = -10

y = -5           Ta Da!
