A piece of wire 72 cm long is cut into two equal pieces and each is formed into a circle. What is the sum, in square centimeters, of the areas of these circles?
The circumference of each circle = 36 cm
The radius of each can be found as
36 =2pi r
r = 36/ (2pi) = 18/pi
The combined area is
2 * pi ( r)^2 =
2 * pi * ( 18 / pi) ^2 =
648 / pi cm^2
Note that the uncut wire would form a circle with an area of : pi (36/pi)^2 = 2592/pi cm^2 !!!
