Case 1:  3x - 7 >= 0     and     x + 1 >= 0

                    3x >= 7                      x >= -1

                      x >= 7/3

               Comgining the above:  x >= 7/3

 

               3x - 7  =  x + 1

                    2x  =  8

                      x  =  4

 

Case 2:  3x - 7 >= 0     and    x + 1 < 0

                    3x >= 7                    x < -1

                      x >= 7/3

               Combining the above:  impossible

 

Case 3:  3x - 7 < 0     and     x + 1 >=0

                    3x < 7                     x >= -1

                     x < 7/3

               Combining the above:  -1 <= x < 7/3

 

                -(3x - 7) = x + 1

                  -3x + 7 = x + 1

                         -4x = -6

                            x = 3/2

 

Case 4:  3x - 7 < 0     and     x + 1 < 0

                    3x < 7                      x < -1

                     x < 7/3

              Combining the above:  -1 < x < 7/3

 

              -(3x - 7) = -(x + 1)

                -3x + 7 = -x - 1

                        -4x = -11

                           x = 11/4     (Impossible, not in the required region for x)
