Notice we can divide the parallelogram like this:

There are two triangles and one smaller parallelogram. The two triangles are the same, and each of their area's is 1/2*1*3=1/2*3=3/2. The parallelogram's area is 1*3=3. So the total area of this is 2(3/2)+3=3+3=6.

Let 1 square be 1 unit squared

5 * 3 = 15

Area of the parallelogram is   15 - ( 2 * 4 + 1 ) = 6 units squared
