The quadratic $x^2-4x-14=3x+16$ has two solutions. What is the positive difference between these solutions?

x^2 - 4x - 14  = 3x + 16          rearrange as

 

x^2 -7x -30   =  0       factor

 

(x -10) ( x + 3) = 0

 

Set each factor to 0 and solve for x

 

x - 10  = 0                x + 3  = 0

 

x  =10                      x = -3

 

The positive difference  is   10 - (-3)   = 13
