x^2 - 4x - 14  = 3x + 16          rearrange as

x^2 -7x -30   =  0       factor

(x -10) ( x + 3) = 0

Set each factor to 0 and solve for x

x - 10  = 0                x + 3  = 0

x  =10                      x = -3

The positive difference  is   10 - (-3)   = 13
