Probably the easiest way to calculate 1/6 of 20-1/2 is to change the 20-1/2 to a fraction.

                                                   20-1/2  =  41/2

Divide that by 6 which is the

same as multiplying it by 1/6       41/2 • 1/6  =  41/12

Simplify the fraction                     41/12  =  3-5/12    (in words, three and five twelfths)
