My basketball team plays four games per week. During the first four weeks, we lost all 16 of our games. During week 5, we won three games and lost one game, bringing us to 3 wins and 17 losses for the season so far. Each week after that, we win 3 games and lose 1 game. At the end of which week will my team have won at least 65% of its games total for the first time in the season?

So far  your team has played  20 games.......

And the number you have won =  3

 

So.....let x  be the number of additional weeks....since you win 3 games a week...you will win 3x additional games....and you will play 4x additional games

 

[ 3 + 3x]

_______   =  .65     cross-multiply

[ 20 + 4x]

 

 

3 + 3x  =  .65 [ 20 + 4x]      simplify

 

3 + 3x  =  13 + 2.6x      subtract 3, 2.6x  from both sides

 

.4x  =  10      divide both sides by .4

 

x  =  25   additional weeks..so...since you have already played 5 weeks...you need to play

 

25  +  5   =  

 

30 total weeks to get to a winning percentage of 65%
