Let's say that B is the larger integer.  Then A would equal (B – 1) since they're consecutive. 

 

Now it's just a substitution problem. 

 

3B – 4A  =  24  

 

3B – (4 • (B – 1))  =  24  

 

3B – 4B + 4  =  24  

 

–B  =  20  

 

Therefore B = –20  and, since A = (B – 1),  A = –21  

 

Check answer by plugging values into original equation:  

 

3 • (–20) – 4 • (–21)  =  (–60) – (–84)  =  +84 – 60  =  24    Answers check okay.
