What is the x-coordinate of the point on the x-axis that is equidistant from points A( -2, 0) B(0,4) and ?

If the point is on the x axis, let it be (m, 0)

 

So ....using the distance formula (squared) we have that

 

(m - 0)^2 + (0 - 4)^2  = ( m + 2)^2 + ( 0 - 0)^2    simplify

 

m^2  + 16  =  m^2 + 4m + 4 

 

16 = 4m + 4

 

4m  =  12

 

m  = 3

 

So...the point  is  (3, 0)
