For some real number A, the graph of the line y=(A + 1)x + 8 in the standard (x,y) coordinate plane passes through (2,6) what is the slope of this line?
Please and thank you !
y=(A + 1)x + 8 (2,6)
First, Hayley...if the line passes through (2,6)......we know that [ substituting for x, y in the given equation] :
6 = (A + 1)(2) + 8 simplify
6 = 2A + 2 + 8
6 = 2A + 10 subtract 10 from both sides
-4 = 2A divide both sides by 2
-2 = A
And in the form, y = mx + b, then y = (A + 1)x + 8 must mean that (A + 1) is the slope....so
The slope = (-2 + 1) = -1
Proof
y = -1x + 8 and when x = 2
y = -1(2) + 8 = -2 + 8 = 6
