Question 1 : 8 pencils and 3 books cost N288 while 5 pencils and 2 books cost N184. what is the cost of pencil and books.

Let the price of a single pencil = P

Let the price of a single book =B

8P + 3B = 288, and

5P + 2B =184,

Solve the following system:
{3 B + 8 P = 288 | (equation 1)
2 B + 5 P = 184 | (equation 2)
Subtract 5/8 × (equation 1) from equation 2:
{8 P + 3 B = 288 | (equation 1)
0 P+B/8 = 4 | (equation 2)
Multiply equation 2 by 8:
{8 P + 3 B = 288 | (equation 1)
0 P+B = 32 | (equation 2)
Subtract 3 × (equation 2) from equation 1:
{8 P+0 B = 192 | (equation 1)
0 P+B = 32 | (equation 2)
Divide equation 1 by 8:
{P+0 B = 24 | (equation 1)
0 P+B = 32 | (equation 2)
Collect results:
Answer: | P = 24         and                       B = 32

Question 2 : The 9th term of an arithmetic sequence is 12 and the 17th term is 28, find the 4th term of the arithmetic sequence.

28 = F + 16 d

12 = F + 8d subtract one from the other

16 = 8d

d =16/8 =2

12 =F + (2*8)

12 =F + 16

F =12 - 16

F = - 4 The first term

4th term =-4 + (3*2)

4th term =-4 + 6

4th term = 2
