                                         1/x  +  1/y  =  3     

                                         1/x  –  1/y  =  7     

add them to obtain           2/x             =  10     

                                                       2  =  10x     —>     x  =  2/10     

 

                                         1/x  +  1/y  =  3     

                                   1/(2/10)  +  1/y  =  3     

                                             5  +  1/y  =  3     

                                                     1/y  =  –2     

                                                        1  =  –2y     —>     y  =  –1/2     

 

                                                  x + y  =     

                                      2/10 + (–1/2)  =     

                                         2/10 – 5/10  =  –3/10
