Suppose a classmate is having difficulty solving 4(x - 7) > 6x + 2 + 8x . Explain how to slove the inequality, showing all the necessary steps and identifying the properties you would use.

4(x - 7) > 6x + 2 + 8x

4x -  28 > 14x + 2 subtract 4x from both sides

- 28  > 10x + 2 subtract 2 from both sides

- 30 > 10x divide both sides by 10

- 3 > x Reverse the inequality

x < - 3

Mmm you can work out what the names of the properties are.

4(x - 7) > 6x + 2 + 8x

4x - 28 > 6x + 2 + 8x

4x - 28 > 14x + 2

4x - 28-14x > 14x + 2 -14x

-10x - 28 >  2

-10x - 28+28 >  2 +28

-10x  >  30

-x > 3

x< -3
