Part 1

A photograph has an area of 24 square inches and the length is 2 inches more than the width. Find the length and width of the photograph.

If x represents the width of the photograph, select all of the equations that could be used to solve this problem.

x(2x) = 24

x(+ 2) = 24

(x + 2)(x) = 24

2(x) + 2(+ 2) = 24

Part 2

Find the dimensions of the photograph.

width = ______ inches

length = ______ inches

you can use the second equation and third equation,4 is your width and 6 is your length. the other guy got it wrong

The second and third equations are essentially the exact same, so those are the equation(s) you want.

Now you need to solve for x to get your width.

x(x+2)=24

x^2 + 2x = 24

x^2 +2x - 24 = 0

Solving for x using the quadratic equation

(-2 (+ or - ) ((2^2)-4(1)(-24))^1/2)/(2(1))                              Taking something to the power of 1/2 is the same as a square root

This gets you x= -4 or 6

In this case, -4 does not make sense because you can't have a negative length.

So x=6. Therefore your width is 6 inches. Since your length is 2 inches longer than the width, add 2, and you get 8 inches.
