Estimate the shaded area of the irregular figure if each square has a length of 1 cm.
From top to bottom
2 + 1 = 3
1 + 1/2 = 1.5
(1/2) (3) (1) = 1.5
Total estimated area = 3 + 3 + 1.5 + 1.5 ≈ 9 units^2
