The lines are drawn at a 45o angle; each of the squares on the graph paper has an x-value of 1 and a y-value of 1; the distance from one corner point of any square to its opposite corner point is sqrt(2).

The length of CD is  2·sqrt(2).

The length of AB is  4·sqrt(2).

The height of the trapezoid is  2·sqrt(2).

Area of a trapezoid  =   ½ · h · (b1 + b2)

                                =   ½ · 2·sqrt(2) · ( 4·sqrt(2) + 2·sqrt(2) )

                                =   ½ · 2·sqrt(2) · ( 6·sqrt(2) )

                                =   ½ · 12 · 2

                                =  12
