One number is   x

    the other is    x+3        they add up to 27       x   +    x+3  = 27

x = number of quarters     .25x = amount of money in quarters

x+5 = mumber of dimes    .10(x+5) = amount of money in dimes

added together these two amounts = 4.00

          .25 x     +    .10(x+5)    = 4.00         solve for x (number of quarters)      then   x+ 5 = number of dimes

Lets use a variable called N. If N + N(+3) = 27 then N must be between 10 and 15. Lets try 12. 12+12(+3) = 27. And that is your answer.
