At what time between 8 PM and 9 PM will the two hands of a 12-hour clock be on top of each other? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth minute.

Use this formula to find the angle = 0

 

0= 1/2*[60*8 - (11*M)], solve for M

 

M = 480 / 11 =43.63636363.....= 43 minutes and 38.1818...seconds. when the two hands will be on top of each other.

Note: You round off the numbers as you wish.

Position of hour hand :   240 degrees + minute /2

Position of minute hand = minute *6

 

240 + m/2 = minute *6

240 + m/2 = 6m

m= 43.64  = 43.6 min

 

43.6 minutes after 8 PM
