2(x-4) / ( x-4)(x-2)

2/(x-2)        when x = 0        2/-2 = -1

Substitute '0' for x in the original equation

-8/8 = -1                                                           Yup, they are equal   cheeky

It is helpful because it 'simplifies' the calculation(s) involved.....there are less chance for errors.
