If you want to place a towel 9 1/2 inches long in the center of the door that is 28 1/4 inches wide. How far will you need to place the towel from the edge of the bar?
These are always a bit more puzzling than they should be, huh???
I'm assuming that the bar width = the door width
First.....divide 28 1/4 by 2 = [113/4 ] / 2 = 113/8 (1)
Next....divide 9 1/2 by 2 = [ 19/2 ] / 2 = 19/4 = 38/8 (2)
Subtract (2) from (1) = 113/8 - 38/8 = 75/8 = 9 3/8 inches from the edge
Proof [ 9 3/8 + 9 1/2 + 9 3/8 ] = 113/4 = 28.25
A slightly different approach:
(28 1/4 - 9 1/2 ) / 2 = 9.375 " (9 3/8)
