Cody had the same number of pencils and erasers.  After he gave 40 of the

pencils and 16 of the erasers to his best friend, the ratio of the remaining

pencils to that of the erasers became 3 : 5.

(a) How many pencils did Cody have left?

(b) If Cody distrubited the remaining erasers to his brother and sister in the

     ratio 1 : 3, how many erasers did Cody's brother receive?

P==Pencils       E==Erasers

P/E ==1,

[P - 40] / [E - 16] ==3 / 5, solve for P, E

P==76 pencils

76 - 40 ==26 pencils has left.

76 - 16 ==60 erasers has left.

1 + 3 ==4 - total ratios.

60/4 ==15 share of each ratio.

15 x 1 ==15 erasers given to his brother.

15 x 3 ==45 erasers given to his sister.

  pencils  erasers
At first 1:1 1x 1x
then 3:5 1x - 40 1x - 16

5(1x - 40) = 3(1x - 16)

working this out to give, 1x = 76

 (a) Number of pencils left = 76 - 40 = 36

 (b) Remaining erasers = 60 were given 1/4 to brother = 15 pieces
