Amanda has 14 coins in her pocket that equal 54 cents. All the coins are nickels, n, and pennies, p. Which combination of coins does Amanda have?

Here's how I solve these type of equations:

 

Say each of the coins were a nickel: then the amount of money would be 70 cents.

That is 16 cents greater than what we want.

If we convert an amount of nickels to pennies, then we would lose 4 cents for each nickel converted because 5-1=4

16/4 is 4. We convert 4 nickels so we get

10 nickels and 4 pennies
