Two ships leave port at the same time, one heading over due south and the other heading east. Several hours later, they are 170 miles apart. If the shop traveling south traveled 70 miles farther than the other ship, how many miles did they each travel?

Pythagorean theorem     c^2 = a^2 + b^2     c = 170

a = distance of one ship

b = distance of other ship = 70 + a

a^2  +  (70+a)^2  = 170^2

a^2  + a^2 + 140a + 4900 = 28900

2a^2 + 140a -24000 = 0                        Quadratic formula yields a =   80 miles  or    -150 (throw out)

                                                                                     other ship = 80+70 = 150 miles
