A kayaker is traveling across a river at a velocity of 5 kilometers per hour. If the current is traveling at a rate of 2 kilometers per hour in a direction perpendicular to the kayaker's movement, what is the actual speed of the kayaker to the nearest hundredth?

We can use the Pythagoean Theorem here.....the  effective speed is

sqrt ( 5^2  + 2^2)    =   sqrt (29)  ≈  5.39 km/h
