A banana and an apple balance a mango. A banana balances an apple and a nectarine. Two mangoes balance with three nectarines how many apples will balance with a banana

This is just a few clever algebraic manipulations... 

Let's say b = banana, a = apple, m = mango, n = nectarine

 

b + a = m 

b = a + n

2m = 3n

 

Since b = a + n, 

 

b + a = m --->  a + n + a = m

2a + n = m 

 

Since 2m = 3n, n = 2m/3

 

2a + 2m/3 = m

2a + 2m/3 = 3m/3

2a = m/3

a = m/6

 

1/6 of a mango balances an apple.
