John mixed together 9 liters of Brand A fruit drink which contains 14% fruit juice and 8 gallons of Brand B fruit drink which contains 48% fruit juice. What is the percent of fruit juice in the resulting mixture?

We have

 

9 * 14%  +  8 * 48%   =   (9 + 8) * x%      simplify

 

9 * .14  +  8 * .48   =   17 * (x/100)

 

1.26  + 3.84  =  17x / 100        multiply both sides by 100

 

126  + 384  =  17x

 

510  =  17x                 divide both sides by  17

 

30  =  x

 

So....the resulting  mixture  is  30%   fruit juice
