Flying against the wind, an airplane travels 6560 kilometers in 8 hours. Flying with the wind, the same plane travels 8260 kilometers in 7 hours. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

Let  the rate of the plane in still air  = P

 

Let  the rate of the wind   =  W

 

Distance  / Rate  = Time  (in hours).....so.....

 

 

 

8260                                                         6560                                              

______  =     7                      and          ______  =    8

R + W                                                      R  - W

 

8260  / 7  =  R + W                              6560  / 8   =  R - W

 

R + W  =  1180    (1)                                R  -  W   = 820    (2)

 

Add (1)  + (2)  and we get that

 

2R   =  2000    divide both sides by  2

 

R  =  1000    (mph)

 

And

 

R - W  = 820

 

1000  -  820  =  W

 

180  (mph) =  W
