Two angels are supplementary. One angle is 3 less than four times the other. Find the measures of the angles

Call one of the angles X

Call the other angle 4X – 3              This is 3 less than 4 times the X angle.

Added together they total 180o       That's what supplementary means.

                                                         X + 4X – 3  =  180o

Combine the X's and

add 3 to both sides                                       5X  =  183o

Divide both sides by 5                                     X  =   36.6o      This is one angle.

The other angle is 4X – 3          (4 • 36.6o) – 3o  =  143.4o     This is the other angle.
