What is the area of the region of the plane determined by the inequality 3 <= |x| + |y| <= 4?

The overlap of these areas  what we want.....  this is  the area of a square with a side of 4  less the area of a square with a side of 3

 

So....the area of interest  is 4^2  - 3^2   =  16 - 9   =    7 units^2
