One number is 2 more than three times another number. it is also 8 less than the quadruple of the other. what are these two numbers?
Let x be one number and y the other and we have this system
x = 3y + 2 (1)
x + 8 = 4y (2)
Sub (1) into (2) for x and we have
(3y + 2) + 8 = 4y
3y + 10 = 4y subtract 3y from both sides
10 = y
And
x = 3(10) + 2
x = 32
