The sum of two numbers is 168. The sum of 1/8 of the smaller number and of 3/4 the greater number is 76. Find the difference between the two numbers.

(1/8)A + (3/4)B  =  76   —>>  multiply across by 8   ——>>  A + 6B  =  608     (eq 2)     

subtract (eq 1) from (eq 2)                                                            5B  =  440

                                                                                                A + 88  =  168     

                                                                                                         A  =  80     

 

                                                                                                88 – 80  =  8
