Sean wants to make a frame for a painting. The painting is square and has an area of 256 square inches. The framing material costs $1.45 per inch. How much will he spend? You may assume that the framing material Sean buys will be the exact amount he needs.

Area of square = S^2, where S is one side.

256 = S^2 take the square root of both sides.

S = 16 inches - the side of the painting

Perimeter of the painting = 4 x 16 = 64 inches.

64 x $1.45 = $92.80 - what Sean will spend to buy the frame.
