Two men starting at a point on a circular 1-mile race track walk in opposite directions with uniform speeds and meet in 6 minutes, but if they walk in the same direction, it requires one hr for the faster walker to gain a lap. What is the rate of the slower walker?

Since they are going in opposite directions, when they meet they have covered 1 mile using their combined speeds   x+ y   mi/min

x+y  mi / min  * 6 min =  1 mile      (x+y) * 6 = 1       or     6x + 6y =1

let x = faster    y = slower

x mi /min * 60 min  =   y  mi/min  * 60  min   + 1 mi     or       60 x = 60 y  + 1

Now you have two equations with two unknowns....solve for x and y
