A villager wants to measure the depth of a well using a rope. If the rope is folded in thirds and measured to the depth of the well, the rope is five feet longer; If the rope is folded in fourths, the rope is one foot longer than the depth of the well. What is the length of the rope and the depth of the well?

Let the length of the rope = L

[L / 3 - 5] = [L / 4 - 1], solve for L

L = 48 feet - length of the rope

L / 3 - 5 = 48 / 3  -  5 = 16 - 5 = 11 feet - depth of the well.
