A vertical pole casts a shadow 20 meters. At the same times, a second vertical pole 8 meters high casts a shadow 32 meters long. find, in meters, the height of the first pole.

 X : 20 where as 8 : 32

8 : 32 = 1 : 4

 

We make these ratio's into fractions...

 

1/4 = x/20

 

We use the proportion laws...

 

4x = 20

 

4x/4 = 20/4

 

x = 5

 

Thus the vertical pole's length is 20 meters

Guest  had everything correct  except the last sentence.....the height  of the first pole =   5 meters instead  of 20 meters
