Sheila needs to determine the equation of a line passing through the point (–6, –2) that is perpendicular to y = 2x– 4. Which equation best represents Sheila's equation?

Do you have equations or do you have to make one up?

(–6, –2)     y = 2x– 4

The slope of the given line  = 2

So.....the line perpendicular to this one will have a negative reciprocal slope, i.e., -1/2

So....using the point-slope form, we have

y -  (-2)  = (-1/2) ( x - (-6) )     simplify

y + 2  = (-1/2) ( x + 6)

y  + 2  = (-1/2)x - 3     subtract 2 from both sides

y = (-1/2)x - 5

cool cool cool
