Steve has one quarter, two nickels and three pennies. Assuming no items are free, for how many different-priced items could Steve individually pay for with exact change?
1 2 3 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 25 26 27 28 30 31 32 33 35 36 37 38 count them.....
The trick to these problems, at least for me, is to find the maximum, and then count backwards and find the possible values.
Hope this helps!
