Sarah took the advertising department from her company on a round trip to meet with a potential client. Including Sarah a total of 8 people took the trip. She was able to purchase coach tickets for $290 and first class tickets for $980. She used her total budget for airfare for the trip, which was $5080. How many first class tickets did she buy? How many coach tickets did she buy?
Let x be the number of coach tickets bought. Since we have 8 the number of people who gets first class is 8 minus the number of coach tickets, or 8-x.
With that in mind you can write the equation as 290*x+980*(8-x)=5080.
Factoring gives:
290x+980*8-980x=5080
290x-980x+7840=5080
Move the x's to one side and the numbers to the other
980x-290x=7840-5080
690x=2760
x=2760/690
x=4
So that gives 4 coach tickets and 4 first class.
You can double check by 4*980 + 4*290 =5080
