x / 6   +   x / 2  = 8          multiply through by 6

x + 3x  = 48

4x  = 48            divide by 4

x  = 12

\(\frac{x}{6}+\frac{x}{2}=8\)

To add fractions, you must have a common denominator.

\(\frac{x}{6}+\frac{x}{2}(\frac{3}{3})=8\)

3 divided by 3 is just one, so it doesn't change the value.

\(\frac{x}{6}+\frac{3x}{6}=8\)

You can also write this like:

\(1\frac{x}{6}+3\frac{x}{6}=8\)

Now you can think of it this way: one apple plus three apples equals four apples. One x/6 + three x/6 = four x/6.

So,

\(4\frac{x}{6}=8\)

Next, divide both sides of the equation by 4. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other in order to keep both sides equal to each other.

\(\frac{4\frac{x}{6}}{4}=\frac{8}{4}\)

When you divide both sides by four, you can think of the left hand side like this: one apple times four divided by four equals one apple. one x/6 times four divided by four equals one x/6.

\(\frac{x}{6}=2\)

\(\)Now multiply both sides of the equation by 6.

x=12
